In 3.5 minutes, learn how M-PESA reached 10 million Kenyans in 3 years

by Jim Rosenberg : Monday, August 2, 2010

We write a lot about M-PESA. That’s because it is the most successful mobile money service launched (so far). This new CGAP video by my colleague Jeanette Thomas explains.

The documentary was pleasant to watch, but I wish greater emphasis had been laid on the factors for M-Pesa’s success so we could know to what extent various factors, such as:
    - offering an efficient and much-needed solution for the masses of this bustling economy,
    - installing an extensive distribution channel,
    - practicing below the line marketing and,
    - the financial literacy of the Kenyan population,
influenced the popularity of this mobile money product.

Do you have more information about this project that you can share with all us. I think this is very interesting project to enlarge business opportunities in some other regions around the world.

This film is excellent in that it brings the thousands of words that have been written about MPESA to life and demonstrates how it works. It is a really useful tool that we, at IAMTN, would like to use from time to time. Thank you.

When I see this video, I wonder if there would be enough space for different agent networks. It seems that in many rural places, that wouldn’t be efficient to have different brands owning different shop, regarding the market. Then, that means that one important feature of the agent network is that it must be independent from the service provider. Or, like in the Kenyan case, that the first mover advantage must lead close to a monopoly situation (but that won’t happen in any other place now everybody knows about MB’s potential unfortunately I guess).
This seems quite in contradiction with the rule that, in order to avoid cash lack, agent networks must be really dense. Any relevance ?
