Microfinance and mobile banking highlights from CGAP - June 2009
by Jim Rosenberg: Monday, July 13, 2009
Well…I’m about two weeks late with this round-up - had to take a few days off after an exciting Mobile Money Summit. In case you missed it, for the month of June on the CGAP Technology Blog:
- Sarah Rotman wrapped up her blog posts from Going Cashless at the Point of Sale: Hits and Misses in Developed Countries with Simpay in Europe, and Osaifu-Keitai in Japan;
- We had a webinar on information systems for microfinance, with great commentary from our friends at Opportunity International, FINCA and Grameen/Mifos;
- Mark Pickens gave us some headline numbers from the CGAP-GSMA Mobile Money Market Sizing Study;
- Olga Morawczynski pointed out how M-PESA may be changing remittance patterns in Kenya;
- Microfinance Podcast shared with us an interview with Nick Hughes, who has been instrumental in getting M-PESA up and running;
- We asked you to tell us your view of “what is the role of mobile operators in expanding access to finance?” - incidentally, the title of a new CGAP brief;
- And from the Mobile Money Summit, a round-up titled (we hope with a bit of provocation): The Hype Cycle and Mobile Banking, 2009.
